Locate students in Mt Diamond rape: Court

Recommendations have been made by a court to the Commissioner of Police to direct his investigators to locate other students involved in the pack rape incident at Mt Diamond in 2015.

Justice Panuel Mogish said their identities are known to the school authorities. None of them were arrested but were terminated after the incident on June 16, 2015.

He made the recommendation today after sentencing 28-year-old James John of Henganofi, Eastern Highlands, to 17 years in jail. He pleaded guilty to rape last year.

“It’s unfair for this offender (John) to be singled out, charged, prosecuted, convicted and sentenced, when his accomplice are walking around freely in the community.

“Those persons pose a serious threat to any woman and girls and the sooner they are apprehended and charged, the better the community can be,” Justice Mogish said.

“Those students who venture beyond this boundary have no place in any learning institutions.

“They took advantage of her state of intoxication, her vulnerability, insecurity and innocence and raped her like a pack of wolves,” he added.

The judge said women are entitled to feel safe and protected in their communities. They should be treated with respect and decency and not as sex objects.
