Lae police prioritise domestic violence

The fight against domestic violence has topped the Lae police list in the second largest city in the country.

Apart from the normal policing of criminal activities, Lae police are also encouraging the general public to be vigilant in reporting and dealing with this issue.

Family and sexual violence is a major issue in Lae with cases of rape and violence against women and girls reported on a weekly basis.

The Lae Metropolitan Superintendent Commander, Anthony Wagambie Junior, who is also a strong advocate, has been vocal on the issue.

The Met Sup said there is a need for stronger actions to be taken against perpetrators as this is one of the worst growing issues, apart from armed robbery and murder in the city.

One of the worst cases of sexual violence reported by far was conveyed in mid-January this year; the padlock case where a 39-year-old man had his sister-in-law’s genitals locked with a small padlock.

According to police report at that time, the action had occurred prior to continuous and severe abuse that had been inflicted by the male suspect.

He was later formally charged and jailed.

The Lae police are further using their Facebook page to post and make awareness to ‘stop violence against women and children’.
