Lae police launch festive season operations

Lae police have launched their festive season operations.

Under the code name ‘Candlelight’, Lae city police will ensure this festive season is enjoyable and trouble-free.

During an operations briefing yesterday, Metropolitan Commander Chief Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr said they want every residents in Lae to enjoy and celebrate Christmas and New Year in peace and harmony.

"We would like every residents and households to celebrate this festive period with total joy and peace in their heart.

“We do not want any disturbances during Christmas observations and the new year," he told his personnel after the end of year parade at Bumbu Police Barracks in Lae yesterday.

He said every men and women in blue will patrol the streets of Lae City and do random checks on suspected hotspots.

He said they have confidence in every Lae resident to observe this festive season with respect for their neighbours when they celebrate the birth of their Lord, Jesus Christ, and the New Year.

Meanwhile, the National Road Safety and traffic police in Lae are also conducting a separate operation during the festive period.

"During peak periods like this, there are many accidents causing death and injuries in the cities and we would like to discourage this as much as possible.

“Therefore, the traffic and road safety people will make sure those (statistics) are reduced," Wagambie Jr said.

While the main operations will start tomorrow, road safety and traffic have already begun theirs last weekend.

Both operations will complement each other and end just after the new year.
