Krangket Island lights switched on at last

Kranget Islanders now have electricity supplied back into their homes after 20 months of living in the dark.

PNG Power switched the power supply back to the island which is just a stone throw from Madang Town, on February 10.

On March 2015, electricity was switched off because the submarine cables were damaged due to excessive forces caused by strong sea currents over the years.

PPL chief executive officer Alex Oa in a statement said, the electricity company was unable to fix the problem because of limited supplies of underwater cables to repair the damage.

He added that, PPL in the coming weeks will send inspectors and technicians to the island to carry out inspections to ensure safety of all connections, and also disconnect illegal power connections.
