Kokoda case ruling further adjourned

An expected ruling into the case of the alleged attack on two tourists along the Kokoda track early last year has been further adjourned to next month.

The case against one of the defendants, Toksy Jacob, briefly went for mention before the Central Committal Court on Tuesday and was adjourned to April 4.

Jacob first appeared for mention in court at Waigani on February 16, 2016, after he was flown to Port Moresby from Kokoda with a 17-year-old defendant.

In Oct 2016, the court received the completed police investigation files in the case against Jacob.

The Committal Court is still assessing evidence in his case. This is to see if there is sufficient evidence to commit it for trial in the National Court.

The case of the 17-year-old defendant is before the juvenile court in Port Moresby.

The Efogi youths were arrested and charged with one count of armed robbery, unlawful wounding and sexual penetration under the Criminal Code Act.

It is alleged they two stole K6,000 cash and 500 pounds off British citizen, Matthew Iovane, while armed with a bush knife and spear.

It is also alleged the two youths, with others, raped American Michelle Clemens and wounded both tourists.

Both defendants are on bail.
