Judiciary prepares for election petitions

The Judiciary is boosting its capacity to deal with election petitions that will arise from this year’s elections, says Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia.

He said the judiciary received the biggest number of election petitions from 2012, over 106 petitions.

Last year, during 2016 Pacific Judicial Conference, Sir Salamo said 109 election petitions were filed from 2012 elections during one of his presentations on the Quality of Justice in the Pacific.

“The judiciary has cleared all election petitions 12 months before the issue of writs and we have also cleared the reviews in the Supreme Court arising from election petitions,” he said today.

Sir Salamo said one of the challenges that will be faced by the judiciary is disposing those new cases and they are building up the number of judges as well as staff on ground.

“I can assure the public that the judiciary has been working on building up its capacity to deal with the election petitions that will come around and dispose of those cases within good time before the next election comes around,” he added.
