Judge: There are older women available

Sexual penetration of children is a big issue in the country where some cases are reported while others are not, says National Court Judge George Manuhu.

He made this comment when sentencing two men he convicted earlier for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old and 11-year-old girl on separate occasions.

One of them was a security guard whom Justice Manuhu sentenced to 9 years with hard labour after he sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl.

The other was sentenced to 12 years with hard labour also after sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl outside Port Moresby in 2015.

Judge Manuhu told them that there are older women to whom they can have sex with and not young girls as young as 10 or 11 years old.

“The girls will leave with the stigma for the rest of their lives because of what the both of you did,” Justice Manuhu said.

He stressed that sexual penetration is a serious crime and most judges sentence accused for more than 17 to 20 years.

However, due to no prior conviction and cooperation with the police by both men, Justice Manuhu sentenced them to 9 and 12 years in jail respectively.
