Highway remains closed

The Eastern Highlands part of the Highlands Highway still remains closed.

Eastern Highlands Provincial Works manager, John Posagu, said there has been a change of plan.

He said though their initial plan of putting in place culverts remains, considering the time it would take, they do not want to delay the normal flow of traffic.

They now have agreed to quickly build a bridge first to restore the normal flow of traffic before putting the culverts.

Posagu said they have a 20 metre base but need another 10 metre to construct a 30 metre base bridge.

He said the other 10 metre base will come from Lae, Morobe Province.

They expect to receive this in the afternoon or tonight and hopefully, complete the bridge by tomorrow.

Posagu said once the bridge is in place, they will work on putting the culverts under the bridge.

For now the road remains closed.

Commuters have been using the bypass road however, are also warned of security risks along the area.

Posagu said police is providing security along the bypass road but because it is quite a stretch of road, they would not be at all sections at once, therefore commuters are urged to be vigilant at all times.
