HB Fire: Fire service to work with community

Acting Deputy Chief for Fire, Patrick Russell said the Hanuabada fire could have been avoided if basic fire safety practices were applied.

“The fire service will be working with local authorities of Hanuabada as well as other families living in similar settings to try to improve fire safety,” Russell said.

He said the fire service cannot to regulate but they can recommend basic safety measures.

Russell added that hopefully from this experience, the Fire Service can get better corporation from communities where they live clustered together in order to achieve a better outcome in terms of fire safety.

“We will work with local leaders to help get the message across.”

Meantime, the incident report released on Thursday September 14th revealed that the fire started because of carelessness.

Electrical fault and arson were ruled out, as most of the evidence were lost in the fire and the occupants of the home were still inside the house when the fire started.

Investigators concluded someone may have left a source of ignition unattended which may have started the fire that spread through the houses.
