Father gives evidence in Tatana trial

The father of the late Naime Saleh Tom or Charlie Naime, the man who was allegedly killed by police at Tatana village on January 17, 2015, today gave evidence in court.

The trial against five police officers who were at Tatana that day to investigate a previous murder, continued today before Deputy Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika.

The trials against Philip Pokop, Lawrence Sausau, Ian Gunawi, Mariah Jones and Jeffrey Sheekiot continued into day three today.

They were on duty investigating the murder of another man, the late Harold Farapo, when they allegedly shot one of the two main suspects in the murder,  the late Saleh Naime Tom, also known as Charlie Naime.

This morning the Councilor of Tatana-Araira gave evidence in court.

Lancon was among six other youths from Tatana who were locked up in a 10 seater vehicle after the shooting.

He was at Hanuabada village to buy betel-nut when police conducted the raid, however he ended up being locked up in the vehicle when he enquired with police as the village councilor. 

The village councilor told the court he was able to see Naime who had both hands and legs tied up, lying naked at the back of a vehicle. He was alive at that time but was bleeding.

Lancon and the six others was taken from the village by police officers to Bautama before they were brought to the Boroko Police station and released later that day without being charged.

He was able to identify three of the five accused who are on trial, as police officers who were at Tatana village that day.  

A 17 year old from the village who was also called to give evidence today.

Meantime, Naime Tom, the father of the late Saleh Naime Tom, from Baruni village was also called in by the state to give evidence in the trial.

 He was in neighboring Baruni village at the time of the shooting.

Collecting a few relatives, he proceeded to the Port Moresby General hospital to check if his son was brought in by police.

He told the court his late son was later brought in by police, however his lifeless body was put on a tray and left outside the hospital.

Evidence from the state continues.

The five accuseds will be given the opportunity to present their case in court at the close of state’s evidence.
