Family of police brutality victim call for justice

The family of Late Andrew Nane Rema who was allegedly shot dead by police in 2015 at the Waigani Fire Station is still waiting justice.

The Late Rema from Southern Highlands was killed in a police shooting on November 26, 2015.

The brother of the late 24-year-old, Nepolian Rema says justice hasn’t been given to the family following their loss.

Rema said it has been over a year now and the family is still waiting for justice to be given to them as to who was responsible for his brother’s death.

He said that is a great concern for his family and people back home after losing their loved one.

Rema said, “We have been victimised by the law enforcing disciplinary forces.

“With more police brutality cases happening in PNG, it is now coming to a stage where civilians are more scared of the disciplinary force than to feel safe and something needs to be done about this.

“Just recently another of our family member Mathias Tio was hurt by police officers in unmarked vehicle at Morata with a tear gas thrown at him and exploded in his face injuring his left side check bone.

“I am very concerned about police brutality in PNG”.

Rema added that this is unbecoming of police officers who should be out there to protect and save lives.

He called on the Police hierachy to look into the death of his brother as the case has become cold.
