ENB maintains clean image

East New Britain is keen on maintaining a clean image.

The ENB campaign to keep the towns clean began last weekend with hundreds taking to the streets of Kokopo, Rabaul and Kerevat.

An initiative of the local chamber of commerce, the first community clean-up was a great success. David Stein, president of the ENBCCI, said it was great to see the number of businesses, community groups and schools doing clean-ups of their own areas.

The various business houses donated gloves and rubbish bins, rubbish plastics, trucks for picking rubbish, rakes and others, to help.

Even schools and community groups came out to work on Saturday. A further clean up on Sunday was done by the SDA groups.

"When I drove up to Kokopo Secondary School, I came across a virtual army with what looked like hundreds of volunteers all dressed in green Rabaul Discovery Tours T-shirts and it gave me goose bumps to see such a great turnout. It was at that moment that I knew the clean-up was going to be a success. I later heard they also sent a huge team into Rabaul as well," Stein said.

He said K-Central and Tropicana had their people out cleaning in front of their stores. KK Connections and NGIP-Agmark Didiman Store had people out cutting the grass and doing their bit. And that in Rabaul PI, Hamamas Hotel and RMI led the clean-up.

Stein was also appreciative of individuals.

"Someone was out with a whipper snipper cleaning along the beach side of the road near Omorong Service Station," he added.

The next towns clean-up is set for end of April.
