Electoral Boundaries Commission to be resurrected

The Government will be re-establishing the Electoral Boundaries Commission to look into the issue of electoral boundaries in districts that have more population.

Minister for Inter-Government Relations, Kevin Isifu, said financial impediment has resulted in the closure of the commission for about a year or two.

Minister Isifu said financial constraint is the main concern that the Government will be looking into to resurrect the very important body within the Electoral Commission.

He said one of the main challenges as well was the location of the electorates.

“Many electorates have raised the concern but because of funding constraints, work has been put on hold.”

He added that the other challenge faced was the number of population in the electorates, which is greatly affecting service delivery in the districts.

The electorates that the Government will be likely to focus on include:

  • Alotau, Milne Bay;
  • Talasea, WNB;
  • Gazelle, ENB;
  • Kairuku/Hiri, Central and
  • Tambul-Nebilyer, WHP

He said the Government will be setting up a committee to look into this issue.
