Education Dept condemns killing of female officer

Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra has condemned the brutal killing of a female officer from the department over the weekend, calling on police to ensure the perpetrator is caught and prosecuted.

News of the brutal killing of Central woman, Grace Gavera, who was an employee of the Education Department, went viral on social media, after she was allegedly beaten to death at Erima on Saturday by her partner.

Dr Kombra said it was unfortunate that the Department is observing the 16 Days of Activism Against ‘Gender Based Violence and Human Rights Campaign’, which runs from November 25 to December 10, when this hideous incident took place.

In a statement released yesterday, he said any form of violence inflicted against a female staff member of the department, teacher or student will not be tolerated, calling on police to ensure the perpetrator is caught.

In offering his condolences to the parents, family and friends of Late Grace Gavera, Dr Kombra said the department also hopes to address the issues of gender-based violence and other social problems.

They aim to do this by including the Citizenship and Christian Values Education as a compulsory subject in schools from elementary up to Grade 12 in 2019.

Meanwhile NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’Dranou said police are on the case.
