Digicel extends thoughts and prayers to injured

The Management of Digicel has extended its thoughts and prayers to those involved in the Kiunga Helicopter accident and to their respective families.

This follows confirmation by the Accident Investigation Commission (AIC) that two people have been taken to hospital for serious injuries while a third person escaped harm.

In a media statement, Director Government Relations & Public Affairs, Gary Seddon, said Digicel was made aware of the accident on Wednesday involving personnel of the company contracted to provide tower and infrastructure services to Digicel.

“At this stage Digicel is aware that the incident has resulted in injuries to passengers and crew of the operating aircraft and a bystander.

“The communication of information is understandably limited, as the contractor, the aircraft owner/operator and the relevant Papua New Guinea Civil Aviation Authorities conduct their appropriate and thorough investigations,” he said.

Seddon added, “In the delivery of services in Papua New Guinea, the safety and security of our staff and our contractors remain Digicel’s highest priority.”

Meanwhile the AIC has dispatched two officers to the crash site to begin its investigation into the likely cause of the accident.

Initial reports state that the aircraft, a Bell 407 Helicopter, crashed when attempting to transport fuel drums to a Digicel tower site.
