Demand for police service increased: Kalaut

The demand for police service has increased dramatically due to the rise in population in the National Capital District and Central Province.

This also includes PNG as a whole.

Many of the issues being faced daily are ‘crimes against persons’.

These are crimes such as assaults, grievous body harm, rape, sexual violence and murder.

Outgoing NCD/ Central Commander, Sylvester Kalaut, says the society we live in has become complex.

Kalaut said this in itself is a challenge for the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary on a daily basis.

“It shows a breakdown in society where people don’t respect each other and not even treasure life.”

He said as members of the RPNGC, it is their duty to be honest, diligent and committed in providing police service to our citizens, which they come into contact with every day.

He said the command has had its fair share of challenges in dealing with unethical behaviour and urged for members in the force to be disciplined.

“We must all play our part in making a difference for this command and constabulary as a whole.”

He added that the commander and metropolitan superintendent cannot handle this issue alone and again, it requires personal will and determination to uphold the Constabulary’s Code of Ethics

He also urged members of the community to respect the rule of law.

“We must respect our fellow citizens and be law abiding,” Kalaut stated.

Kalaut now becomes the Divisional Commander NCD to Assistant Commissioner of Police Human Resources.
