Commission monitoring Boeing crashes

The PNG Accident Investigation Commission is closely monitoring the unfolding situations regarding the major crashes of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft operated by Lion Air in Indonesia and Ethiopian Airlines in Ethiopia.

Chief Commissioner Hubert Namani said: “Indonesia and Ethiopia are signatory States to the Convention on International Civil Aviation and the investigation authorities in Indonesia and Ethiopia conduct investigations in accordance with ICAO Annex 13 Standards.

“The AIC understands that the United States National Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Boeing Company are assisting the Indonesian and Ethiopian investigation authorities with their investigations.

“I want to assure our PNG citizens and the travelling public that the Boeing 737 aircraft operated by Air Niugini and all operators currently flying Boeing 737 aircraft to and from Papua New Guinea, are not the Boeing 737 MAX model.

“It is too early in the investigation of the Ethiopian crash to make any assessment of likely similar causal or contributing factors to the Lion Air crash.

“In accordance with International Standards, all statements of cause and contributing factors must come from the Investigation Authority of the State conducting the investigation. The PNG AIC will closely monitor all statements released by these Investigating Authorities.”
