Capt Polewara defends PNGDF commander

The PNG Defence Force Chief of Staff, Captain Philip Polewara, has defended the PNGDF against comments made on social media.

He said while some of these statements were valid, others were just for self-interest.

The Chief of Staff made the comment following criticisms on social media that the current PNG Defence Force Commander has failed to implement the Defence Force White Paper 2013.

In a statement, the Chief of Staff, Navy Captain Philip Polewara, said most of these comments personal and self-serving.

The Chief of Staff in defence said under the current economic climate, funding has been a concern for the Defence Force Organisation since 2013.

But despite the funding issue, Captain Polewara maintains that the PNGDF has continued to maintain its core business over the last four years.

Core businesses include security along the land border, supporting police to address law and order, especially in the Highlands region and relief support, among others.

Polewara said all these things cost money and for someone to say the Commander has failed to implement the Defence Force White Paper was misleading.

He further said those who have been complaining about the implementation of the Defence White Paper 2013 do not understand the current economic climate and understanding of policy implementation and asset acquisition processes.

Despite the challenges, Polewara said service conditions and the overall discipline of the Force has improved whilst they continue to work hard to achieve capability development programs within the current economic climate.
