Barracks barricaded by frustrated families

The situation at the Gordon Police Barracks has returned to normal.

A few hours earlier however, the entrance into the barracks was barricaded, with tree branches and an old vehicle, with a fire lit in front.

Police officers and their families put up placards with messages asking for alternative accommodation.

Their action was in reaction to the Police Commissioner’s announcement to demolish the accommodation at Gordons Police Barracks to make way for new buildings there.

Some placards read: Where will we go now? and No alternative accommodation, no eviction.

These messages were directed to the Prime Minister, Police Minister, Police Commissioner and Housing Minister.

The barricade was put up as early as 5am this morning.

By 7:30am, Superintended Operations NCD, Insp Michael Tilae addressed the officers and their families admitting that while they have a right to express themselves they should not highjack police operations by blocking the road.

He asked them to remove the barricade and assured them that he would get back to them after he liaised with his superiors on the matter.

The barricade was taken down soon after.

More details to follow.
