Alcohol, substance abuse behind accidents: Report

Police statistics show that high occurrences of traffic accidents are due to alcohol and substance abuse.

These also include alcohol-related violence in families and within communities.

NCD/ Central Divisional Commander, Donald Yamasombi, stressed this on Tuesday during the launch of RPNGC Christmas operations whilst challenging NCD residents on making the festive period ‘accident- free’.

Yamasombi said Port Moresby, as we all know, is the berthing port of PNG.

The ever-increasing population in the nation’s capital, the expansion of the city boundaries and the growth in the SME sector for residents to sustain their livelihood places more strain on the policing strategy.

“This is also with the limited resources we have,” he reiterated.

Yamasombi said productive partnership with key stakeholders will also make for a positive step forward in delivering policing services to our people.

Resources, like the truck donated by the Minister for Housing and Urbanisation, John Kaupa, are greatly appreciated by police.

He adds that resources are not easy to come by and whilst appreciating the donation, he warned officers that those found abusing and recklessly using their assets will face severe penalties.

Yamasombi urged all officers on parade and in NCD to do their jobs diligently over the festive period and to focus on a prosperous 2018.
