Accused soldier speaks out

The soldier involved in the alleged assault of the ENT Doctor from the Port Moresby General Hospital has welcomed police investigations into the matter.

The soldier is out on bail and confined to the Taurama Military Barracks.

Desmond Dusava who is at the centre of attention following the alleged assault on the Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) doctor is appalled by the reactions from social media users.

Speaking to Loop PNG, he said it’s frightening that without hearing the two sides of the story, the public already came up with their judgement and penalties.

But he says, he respects their views and awaits the decision of the Courts.

“I welcome the investigation by police into this matter. I won’t hide anything and will cooperate with the police and await the Court’s decision on the case, not the social media to become the judge of the case.”

He also clarified accusations that other soldiers were involved in the matter.

"Just to clear the organisation where I currently serve as an active member, at the time of the incident, there were no soldiers involved, none of the military assets were used, I wasn’t in uniform, I wasn’t on duty as alleged.

“The incident happened at my residence at Waigani and nothing involving the army or PNG Defence Force.”

Meantime, the PNG Defence Force Chief of Staff, Navy Captain, Philip Polewara said Dusava has been charged under the Code of Military Discipline and will appear before a senior disciplinary officer for hearing.

He said the outcome of the case will depend on hearing both sides of the story.

Meanwhile police reports have indicated that the victim in the matter has failed to collaborate with detectives to establish the seriousness of the assault.
