‘Police policing team’ in full swing

NCD Police’s efforts to weed out ill-disciplined and rogue police officers has seen the creation of a ‘Police policing team’.

Eleven arrests have been made so far in the last two months by the team, made up of the Minor Crimes Unit based at the Gordon Police Station, Internal Affairs Directorate and Special Services Directorate.

The demand by NCD city residents for a stop to illegal activities by police officers has seen the establishment of a team of 35 officers to deal effectively with officers who violate discipline standards.

Policing the police is an approach directed by the Police Commissioner to weed out ill-disciplined officers as well as those involved in criminal activities; to regain public confidence in police service in NCD.

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent, Perou N’Dranou, said in order to address crimes in NCD, police need to get their own house in order.

“Our future efforts will be concentrated on criminal investigations rather than trying to divide our limited resources. It is an alternative to improve police image and ultimately address crime problems in NCD.

“The team is not taking over the role of the NCD Internal Investigation Unit or Internal Affairs Directorate, but it is reinforcing its role,” he added.

So far two policemen have been convicted by the courts, 11 have been arrested and 8 have cases still before the courts.

He warned all police officers both in NCD and Central to refrain from involving in illegal activities as he will not hesitate to authorise investigations into their conduct.

An appeal is now out to all city residents to assist the police policing team with evidence and facts of any disciplinary or criminal behaviour of officers.

The team will be based at the Gordon Police Station.
