Everyone’s responsibility to eradicate illiteracy: Kombra

Eradication of illiteracy and innumeracy is everyone’s responsibility and not just the government’s, says Secretary for Education Dr Uke Kombra.

Speaking during the 22nd National Literacy Week launch at Tapini High School in Goilala district of Central Province on Monday, Dr Kombra said more effort is required from every sector of the community to raise the level of literacy in PNG.

“When we all play our part, every Papua New Guinean will become literate and will be able to participate meaningfully in the socio-development of our country.”

He said to elevate the national literacy rate, the current Department, supported by the government, has invested K602 million this year through the Tuition Fee Free (TFF) policy to educate children from elementary to secondary.

“Literacy is a vital tool for all because it empowers one with numeracy and reading skills that can enhance one’s local knowledge and skills.”

Dr Kombra added that countries are developed when people are well informed in knowledge because they have acquired competitive skills through reading.

“In PNG, literacy and numeracy are vital skills as they allow one to contribute fully towards the development of his or her province and this country as a whole.

“This has prompted the government to prioritise improved education services to be delivered to all the provinces in PNG.”

This year’s 22nd National Literacy Week theme is: “Quality Literacy, Quality Life”. It was a week-long event that started from Sept 4-8, 2017.
