No political will over gun control: Singirok

Chairman of the Guns Control Committee and former PNGDF Commander, Major-General (retired) Jerry Singirok, has commended the Police Minister for tabling the gun control issue in Parliament last week.

Singirok told this newsroom that the Gun Control Report, which was presented to past and present governments, has not been given consideration.

He added that it has been 12 years since its introduction to Parliament.

“It is commendable and timely after so many lives have been lost without any directives from the government in regards to gun control.

“Politicians are so irresponsible and did not take into consideration the problems that will be stemming from the report.”

Singirok added that there is no political will to implement the Gun Control Report.

He was the Chairman of the Guns Control Committee set up in 2005 to come up with recommendations to address issues on gun violence in the country.

244 recommendations were made by the guns committee however, nothing has been forthcoming to date.
