The missing persons issue is a new trend and has never been a traditional police issue let alone a program.
This has however come to light on the rise of reports coming in of men, women and children going missing.
NCD Metropolitan Superintendent, Perou N’Dranou, said they have been having talks amongst the hierarchy to set up a unit.
He said just like Family Sexual Violence Unit (FSVU), it had never been a traditional police unit until the 2000’s because of the increases of this incident.
“The same is now being seen in the missing persons cases.”
He said however that there are of course procedures that take place when a missing persons report is filed at the stations and the word is passed around to other members of the force to look out for the missing person.
“We don’t have the specialized police unit for missing persons that can work tirelessly.”
He assured however that the police will do their bit in trying to recover the missing people, but there is a need for a dedicated team to be working on this rather than general unit that will have many things to do.
He further stressed on the role of the media having to disseminate the message out to the general public saying this always helps in assisting police to locate the missing person quickly.
