Marum to finalize team from historic tri-contest

PNG LNG Kumuls coach, Michael Marum will be using tomorrow’s historic tri-contest to help finalize his first 17 for PNG’s first match of the Rugby League World Cup 2017, which is just two weeks away.

The tri-contest will see Australia, Fiji and PNG face off in in Suva in a series of 40 minute matches played back to back at ANZ Stadium.

Fiji will face PNG before Australia takes on both PNG and finally Fiji.

“We want to try playing all 21 players in stages of the match. Some will play against Australia, some will play against Fiji. We want to get at least 20 minutes out of everyone.”

“This is the only test left for us in order to select the best team for game one,” said Marum.

Despite limited time to prepare for tomorrow’s match, Marum said the team has worked hard all week to be match ready.

“We understand Australia and Fiji will have a bigger pack. They’ll be trialling players as well.

“The main thing for us is just working together and to keep talking. For me, this is a more of a trial, we understand it’s going to be tough, if we win, that’s a bonus for us.

“I just want the boys to go out there and play together as a team and enjoy their footy, “said Marum.

Marum added the only player yet to arrive at camp is Paul Aiton who is still in England. He said Aiton will join the team after the tri-contest.

The Kumuls will have two days off after the tri-contest before going back into camp on October 19 to prepare for their first pool match of the World Cup against Wales on October 28 at the National Football Stadium.

PNGTV will broadcast the tri-contest which kicks off at 3pm.
