Students disappointed with unis

A no-show by a number of universities at the career expo organised for secondary schools in NCD has come as a disappointment to many students.

The expo this year has seen only three universities participate: Pacific Adventist University, University of Papua New Guinea and Divine Word University.

Gavena Gwaibo, the host school’s deputy principal (Port Moresby National High School), who is also on the expo committee, said University of Goroka, University of Technology and the Papua New Guinea University of Natural Resources and Environment did not turn up even though they were invited.

“I had comments from a few students who were quite disappointed especially about UOT, because UOT is a university that deals with engineering courses…many of our students would want to go there but that’s their decision,” she said.

She also added that this is not the first time for UOT to not be present.

Gwaibo said the committee is a non-profit organisation and all logistics are catered for by students’ fee.

“This year, because we don’t have support from others, even the department of education and NCD education, we asked students to pay K10 but the principals of all NCD schools agreed that half will be paid by students and the other half by the school.”
