Nurses reminded to stick to basics

This is a group of people responsible for the basic care of a human life from the womb to the tomb.

Nursing is about caring and the model of care used is a holistic approach, says Sr Jayasree Kumar, the Director of Nurses (DoN) with Pacific International Hospital.

The approach, she says, includes primary nursing care which indicates attention from the start.

“A patient’s basic fundamental needs are food, water, air, shelter. These are essentials for existence. Nurses actually help patients meet those needs,” she said.

She describes it as a scared concept.

International Nurses Day (May 12) celebrates the work of nurses throughout the world.

But to nurses, it’s a reminder of the commitment to a human life.

PIH assistant DoN, Sr Joyce Daniels reminded the 80 nursing staff of PIH to remember the basics.

“Nursing care is the basic, not the injection and not the medicine. It’s the smile, your first touch, your voice and your spirit as you approach your patient,” she said.
