It’s an expedition that seems impossible.
But if seafarers in the past have succeeded, the ancient seafaring wisdom will prove worthy again.
A journey which began in August 2016 where, for the last nine months, a Danish adventurer and filmmaker Thor F. Jensen has been sailing around PNG and Papua in a Milne Bay traditional sailing canoe.
This may be the world’s first circumnavigation of the island of New Guinea in a traditional sailing canoe.
To prove what their remarkable canoes are made of, two brothers from Basilaki Island – Justin and Sanakoli John – have taken on as master sailors. They are teaching Jensen to live and sail like the Melanesians have done for centuries.
The whole adventure has been shared on social media – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram – by Jensen.
But the record attempt is yet to be completed. After 4600km of roaring waves, incredible encounters and several near capsizes, the expedition has been put on hold due to hard winds and lack of funds.
Tonight, July 25, Jensen will be making an appearance at the Massim Museum in Milne Bay Province.
He will reveal the motivation behind this exceptional journey, tell stories of the people encountered and share the experience of voyaging in a traditional sailing canoe.
The captivating accounts will be brought to life through video and images from the voyage.
