More life-saving cardiac surgeries conducted at PIH

Seven cardiac patients have successfully undergone lifesaving surgeries at the Pacific International Hospital over the last four days.

A team of four specialists from India, three cardiac surgeons and one cardiac anaesthesiologist made this possible through a partnership with PIH.

The team including a back-up group from the host hospital began almost back-to-back operations since April 2.

The final surgery was completed yesterday, April 5.

Dr Vishal Gupta said the outcome has been very satisfactory.

“Three of the seven have been discharged from ICU to the ward today, the other three shifted to the step down ICU and only one, who underwent a bentall procedure, remains in the ICU but mobilised,” he said.

This is not the first for the visiting specialists.

“This is our second visit after nearly 5 months down the line. We operated 4 cases last time, they are all doing well. This time, because we are looking at good infrastructure, good people and good staff who have fantastic capability, we were encouraged to do more cases,” Dr Gupta added.

The 11 cases covered the whole spectrum of the heart related surgeries, 6 of which were high-risk.

“We thank God, we have been given the opportunity to serve the people of PNG.

“We have already screened four more and we will be back in PNG,” he said.

First two of the team left the country yesterday. The other two leave today.
