Local designers to showcase talent tonight

The Miss Pacific Islands Pageant (MPIP) PNG project runway is set for tonight, with 11 designers confirmed.

The event will take place at Crowne Plaza, downtown, Port Moresby.

Initially, project runway was established by the MPIP PNG committee, as a platform to select the designer for Miss PNG to the Miss Pacific Islands pageant.

The event has however turned out to be more than just that.

For this year, the project runway focuses on enhancing the talent of local designers in the Traditionally Inspired Dress Category.

The committee hosted workshops on two separate days this week – Tuesday and Thursday, where local designers had sessions with two renowned fashion designers in the pacific.

Epeli Rakai Tuibeqa from Fiji and Sione Maileseni from Tonga imparted their skills with the women designers, to use natural materials to their advantage.

With preparations being finalised, Chairperson Molly O’Rourke is excited to announce the growth of the project.

She says the project runway started off with only three designers in 2015.

Last year 2016 saw 10 designers and this year, 11 have been confirmed, with at least three new designers on board.

The event not only provides opportunity for local designers, but also local fashion models.

This runway, will see at least 70 models taking on the stage, to showcase the product of PNG’s very own local designers.

Crowning of Miss PNG is set for October 28, 2017.
