Last minute school shopping in nation’s capital

With one sleep to go before the 2017 academic year begins, hundreds of parents in Port Moresby got busy on the weekend to do last minute shopping for their children.

A particular shop at Boroko, Port Moresby, which sells schools uniforms for 150 schools in the National Capital District, opened its doors to parents for the whole day on Sunday to cater for parents’ last minute shopping.

The shop manager confirmed with Loop PNG that they expect more parents to rush in to buy school uniforms in the coming days.

Loop PNG caught up with mother of four, Tittianne August, who was out doing last minute shopping for school uniforms.

August said: “I already did stationery shopping two weeks ago but I was busy during the last two weeks so it’s now last minute uniform shopping for me.

“I’m always on time, I do school shopping two weeks in advance but due to personal commitment, I was delayed this year but I’m glad to get it out of the way now as I look forward to a busy school year.”

Father of two high school students, Kene Aiyele, from Pangia in Southern Highlands, said his children are prepared with their uniforms and ready for the school year.

“We didn’t get to buy few things like stationery, including folders and biros, so we had to do this last minute shopping,” Aiyele said.

Grade 11 student at Don Bosco Technical School, Calvin Kabai, said he is looking forward to going back to school this year to learn many new things and to meet old and new classmates.

Shops are anticipating busy days ahead as parents and students prepare for the start of classes in public schools this week.
