Governor Parkop, residents barred from entering school

For some residents in Port Moresby, their hopes to celebrate the International Day of Yoga as a community did not become reality today.

This morning, hundreds of people, including Governor Powes Parkop, were turned away from the gates of The Ela Murray International School.

According to organisers, only those with white shirts distributed were allowed to enter the school field for the yoga session.

After some minutes trying to reason with them, Governor Parkop, who was in a blue T-shirt, and the rest of the walk for life participants, left.

Governor Parkop initiated the concept of Walk for Life and later on, Yoga for Life by the Yoga Unites was merged with the Walk for Life program, to achieve a healthier and peaceful community.

For this reason, some youths were disappointed to see majority of the community, including the governor, barred from entering the premises.

Governor Parkop however, addressed participants, asking them to accept the decision.

"Walk for Life and yoga for life is not for politics. It's for the benefit of our health. So take your politics away from here," he told those present.

For the last two years, Governor Parkop participated and was also a speaker at the event.

This year, he said: "To make it fair, I will not go in."

After the governor left, there were a few sticks and stones hurled over the fence by a couple of angry youth.

But the event commenced and continued on a good note.

"This is the occasion that demonstrates we can still have peace, we can still have harmony," said Mohan Singh - chairman of the organising committee of yoga.

International Day of Yoga falls on the 21st of June.

Port Moresby's yoga community celebrates the day on the Sunday of the week leading to the International day of yoga. This has been for the past two years.
