Food poisoning investigation ongoing

Authorities in the investigation of the food poisoning incident at Sizzler’s Family Restaurant say the process is still ongoing.

These authorities include team officers from NCDC Health, National Health Department and World Health Organisation.

While the restaurant management says they are still awaiting NCDC’s outcome on the investigation, an NCDC health representative said the team is yet to establish any findings to the case.

Confirming this, Department of Health’s (DoH) program officer – surveillance and emergency team, Barry Ropa, said the investigation process is complex.

He also confirmed the DoH carrying out a survey among those that had dined at the restaurant (both sick and well), over the week concerned (May 13-14).

The survey (which has since ended) was completed online or over the phone with officers. However, many of those affected by the alleged food-borne illness say they did not sight the survey.

Chantelle Brittain is one of the few who filled out the survey. She also circulated it on social media for others who may have fallen victim, to fill out.

Her family – husband and 2 children (daughter 9, son 13) – had dined at the establishment and was treated at the Pacific International Hospital after being diagnosed with salmonella and typhoid, which are commonly associated with food poisoning.

She has since sent health results of her family to Gateway and DoH.

While awaiting the outcome of the investigation, Brittain says to keep contact with other victims to see the best approach going forward.

The authorities request patience at this time as the matter is still under investigation.
