It starts with you

It starts with you as an individual, they say.

So a young woman has taken it on herself to share the spirit of peace and harmony where she goes.

It started with her decision to attend a camp for self-discovery.

Nadia Marai, a recent graduate of the University of Papua New Guinea’s journalism strand, sees herself as fortunate to be a participant to the 2nd Pacific Self-Discovery Camp early this year in March.

The camp attracts young people from within the Pacific who are interested in learning and exploring self-development as a primary means to discovering their true self, and making this world a better place to live in.

She admits finding it difficult at first, trying to clear her mind of all negativity and focus on positive things around her.

“I slowly picked up throughout the camp…the facilitators are certified meditation and mindfulness trainers so they taught us many helpful techniques,” she says.

The group had lectures on youth empowerment, work-life balance, stress management and many topics that would help them be good positive citizens of their respective countries.

She met with other positive and vibrant youth from the Pacific with the same wish – to live peaceful lives in their countries and communities.

Together, they have become part of a new force – a Network of Peace Rebels.

“Together we are slowly building a network of peace and harmony which is one particular character Pacific Islanders are known for.

“We are planning to reach more young Pacific Islanders by getting them to apply and be part of this amazing network of peace builders,” she said.

Since the camp, she has learnt to deal with problems and conflicts within her family and community as a responsible young person.

The 3rd Pacific Self-Discovery Camp is set for November, which she says focuses on bringing together youths from the Federated States of Micronesia.

But she is encouraging young Papua New Guineans to complete the 14-day online program.

“We live in a world which is chaotic and very demanding.

“Our endless struggle in between professional growth, academic success and personal responsibilities is keeping us restless and stressful. It is important to stop for a moment in order to truly understand and discover our own selves.

“Self-discovery is one of the most important steps for us to realise our full potential and for us to know how to live successful and happy lives.”
