The emerald green tree snail’s story

Miss Papua New Guinea Niawali Twain's sarongwear told the story of the emerald green tree snail, found nowhere else in the world but in Manus.

The emerald green tree snail, also called the 'forest jewel', is scientifically known as papustyla pulcherrima.

Miss Twain, who is part Manus islander, highlighted the fact that the green snail is an endangered species and its habitat, the tropical rainforest, is being threatened by logging, road construction, other development activities and rising sea levels. She used the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant platform to call for its protection.

During the day (6 December), the nine Pacific Island contestants from American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Rapa Nui (Easter Islands), Samoa, Solomon Islands and Tonga marched one-and-a-half kilometers through Nadi town ahead of the official opening ceremony of the four-day pageant.

The official opening ceremony was held at 7:30pm on Wednesday, where the contestants introduced themselves before the sarongwear show.

The next event was topic presentation, which took place on Thursday (yesterday) at 11am. Miss Twain's topic is Tourism.

The free of charge public event is being live streamed by official broadcast partner – Fiji TV.
