Battle of the bands feedback

The battle of the bands initiative has gained the interest of many.

But with its popularity also comes the need to polish up on certain areas.

Some of these observations were shared by Julius Pano, a musician and keen observer of the competition.

On top of Pano’s list is the need for feedback from judges.

“Judges should spend at least five minutes with eliminated bands to go over why they are eliminated, what the band’s strengths are and where they should improve on.”

He said as it is now, the bands eliminated are dropped from the competition without a clarity on the judges’ decision.

“This is a platform to build musicians, so details like these should be clearly communicated with participants,” he added.

Pano also said the main judging criteria should not be rated only on crowd ovation, but more on the music and creativity.

“When crowd response is the main factor, bands performing towards the end of the show attract more crowd, who by now are under alcoholic influence,” he said.

Other areas touched were the need to engage sound engineers with better knowledge on mixing sounds and the inclusion of at least one judge who is well versed with the theme of the night.

For future competition, he hopes these points can be considered.

“I’d say the competition has lost the true meaning of battle of the bands. It’s a good initiative in place, but these areas need improvement. Creativity should make the bigger portion of the judging than the crowd reaction.”
