Paradise Cinema’s box-office records were shattered at the opening weekend of Marvel Studios’ ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ movie.
More than 10,000 people watched the movie since its advanced screening last Wednesday, April 25, through to the weekend.
Arriving with unprecedented excitement, mystery, and anticipation, “Avengers: Infinity War” dropped to a record-shattering sold-out crowd, creating a new milestone in PNG cinema history.
All sessions last Saturday were sold out and Sunday sessions did very well too.
This marks the biggest-ever opening weekend in Paradise Cinemas since it opened in 2012.
Before Infinity War, Disney’s Moana used to hold the biggest opening weekend record, followed by Fast and Furious 7, Avengers 2, Jumanji (2017), Batman VS Superman, Black Panther and Fate of the Furious.
Paradise Cinemas manager, Prue Go, said: “It’s unbelievable. When we opened at 9am over the weekend, our 10am and 11am sessions were sold out within half an hour. By 12noon, we are already selling the 4pm and 5pm sessions.
“Paradise Cinemas has got a good track record when it comes to Marvel movies because of our ardent moviegoers. That’s why Disney, the film distributor of Marvel movies, always grants us advanced screening on all its recent movies like Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Spiderman: Homecoming; Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther. We have shown Infinity War two days ahead of its international screening date,” Go added.
Aside from PNG, Infinity War opened last April 25 in selected overseas markets, where it has sold US$95 million worth of tickets in its first two days, according to Disney reports.
Another as-yet-untitled Avengers movie is in post-production and due for release in May 2019.
Infinity War is already far ahead of rivals this year, thanks to the US$1 billion-plus generated by Black Panther, a fresh hit from the company’s Marvel superhero library last February.
Disney originally planned to release Infinity War on May 4 but moved it a week earlier after the box office success of Black Panther.
Moving up the date put some distance between the picture, another Marvel film called Deadpool 2 set for May 18 and another Star Wars movie, Solo, due on May 25.
