Weiang optimistic in upcoming elections

​A law graduate and intending candidate for North Waghi district in Jiwaka, Veronica Weiang is quietly optimistic of her chances in the upcoming national elections.

Weiang shared this sentiment after attending week long PNG Practice Parliament Session for Women 2017 recently.

 Weiang, a law graduate with a colourful private sector experience will bring with her many skills in business into the world of PNG politics as elections nears this year.

The PNG Practice Parliament Session for Women 2017 was conducted by UNDP, the National Parliament and the Office of Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates.

Weiang was among 50 women selected from over 200 applicants, who applied to be trained on parliamentary process, the norms of governance and on political debate and policy decisions.

The training was conducted at Gateway Hotel which ended with Mock Parliament broadcasted live on FM100 Radio. 

Ms Weiang said attending the training has provided her the opportunity to bond with many other PNG women leaders from around the country and to create a lasting network of friendship.

She believes that regardless of election results, the bond created at this meeting, can be fostered to stir new opportunities and progress women’s political voice in the country.

Weiang was the opposition leader during the mock session of parliament and led her team in the Mock Parliament.

In the "Questions Without Notice" she highlighted issue of shortage of critical medical supplies in the country and queried on the Manus Central Processing Centre.
