PIF to send observers

The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Secretariat will send an observer group to monitor the 2017 National Election’s polling and counting.

The PIF observer team to arrive in the country this week will comprise of Solomon Islands Electoral Commissioner Taeasi Sanga, Nauru Electoral Commissioner Joseph Cain and Tonga Electoral Commissioner Pita Vuki.

The mission will be supported by staff from the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.

The 14 days of nationwide polling will begin on June 24.

PIF Secretary General, Dame Meg Taylor, said the Forum was pleased to accept the invitation from the Government of Papua New Guinea.

“Good governance and the full observance of democratic values lie at the heart of the Pacific region we strive for.

“Electoral missions like this are an important way of strengthening our processes and ensuring we continue to uphold these values.” 

The Team will deploy in four stages to observe the pre polling, polling and counting for the election.

They will be operating in the provinces of East New Britain, East Sepik, National Capital District, Milne Bay, Southern Highlands and Western Highlands.
