Election complaints investigation team set up

Police in Manus have set up an investigation team that would deal with election related complains this election period.

Acting Manus Provincial Police Commander, Senior Inspector David Yapu, is now urging all election related complains to be forwarded to the team and people should not take election related matters into their own hands.

He said 116 members are also ready to conduct security operations in the province during this period.

His office is working closely with the provincial election office and so far, he is pleased with the candidates' conduct since the close of nominations last Thursday.

For the Manus open seat, 34 candidates are contesting while 26 are vying for the Regional seat and Yapu said so far, he has not received any complaints from the candidates and their supporters.

PPC Yapu is appealing to the people to respect the rule of the law and ensure that the conduct of the Election is free, fair and safe, where voters can exercise their democratic rights to vote their leaders into the National Parliament.

He said candidates and their supporters, from both the regional and open seat, should conduct peaceful and orderly campaign and not personally attack or criticise one another.

"They must provide a good campaign on their parties’ policies and platforms," Yapu said.

PPC Yapu said his police officers will not hesitate to deal with any individual who disrupts the election process.
