Campaign period enters into second week

This week will be the second week of election campaigning in Papua New Guinea’s 2017 National Elections, which is held every five years for the 111 Parliament seats.

Campaign period started on 20 April, following the close of nomination for candidates intending to contest for the 22 Provincial and 89 Opens seats.

The eight weeks of campaign will end on 23 June, followed by the start of 14 days nationwide polling.

PNG Electoral Commission media officer Alphonse Muapi said the total number of candidates contesting in this year’s election will be official released by the PNGEC later today or on Monday.

Meanwhile, PNGEC in a statement earlier stated that more than 4,000 intending candidates filled Form 29 to contest the 2017 National Election.

“This figure is not final. After the close of nomination, the final figure can be disclosed on the total number of candidates that will contest the 2017 National Election.”
