Deferral, unwelcome news: Local

The news on polling deferral in the National Capital District has not been welcomed by many voters, especially those in the workforce.

Lawyer Nou Vada, who’s in the public sector, raised concerns on this.

“A lot of people have taken a day off today. And many will agree that it is a really difficult thing to do, especially for the private sector, especially in the middle of the week.

“There’s a lot of apprehension right now with people who are going to work, if they don’t vote today and they are not released back on Friday, the whole democratic process that’s supposed to be underscored by this activity of voting could end up being a big sham,” he said.

He also added that one day is not enough, taking into consideration places such as Hanuabada-Elavala with a bigger population.

“One day voting is not enough, not by even by a long shot. Hanuabada alone and neighbouring villages (ward 1) is about 12,800 votes, if they all showed up. You cannot possibly poll all of them in a day... that’s impossible,” he said.

In terms if it being a free and fair election, “we’re yet to see that”, he said.

But in general, the deferral and lack of communication and clarity on the whole issue is disappointing to many.

“We have three candidates from our village contesting. And we’ve been preparing for years for this election. So turnout of today is an unsatisfactory outcome for all,” he said.
