Candidates demand halt to quality checks

Moresby South candidates have demanded that quality checks of ballot papers be stopped immediately.

The candidates have petitioned the Electoral Commission to stop quality checks because their scrutineers were not present during counting on Sunday (July 9) and Monday night.

The candidates claim that there was foul play during the counting process.

Candidate Joe Daure, on behalf of the candidates, highlighted that the Electoral Commission must look into this issue.

In the petition, the candidates have demanded for two scrutineers to be present at the counting venue and allow them to closely observe the counting of the ballot papers.

They also call for the presiding officers to be present to verify the ballot boxes witnessed by the scrutineers, which never eventuated.

They also demand answers as to why counting was done at night without the scrutineers. This was during the counting of up to 60 ballot boxes.

An election official and security personnel received the petition at Rita Flynn on behalf of the election manager, which will be presented to Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato.
