YouTube reportedly wants to get into 360-degree live streaming

The future of YouTube could lie in 360-degree video live streaming, following reports that the Google-owned firm has held meetings with camera manufacturers to discuss the feature.

The video giant wants to allow users to be able to upload 360-degree footage from 360-degree camera hardware as they would from a regular snapper, according to BuzzzFeed News.

YouTube's talks with the camera manufacturers are said to be centred around creating an industry standard for 360-degree video streaming, as few commercial devices are capable of that feat.

Most that can pull it off offer low-quality streaming, although workaround solutions exist. For instance, some cameras shoot multiple angles at once and splice them together after recording has ended.

YouTube is reportedly working on ways of adapting this method to live streaming, such as processing the footage at its end on the fly.

File this one under rumour for now as YouTube isn't commenting, but the video network started embracing 360-degree recordings in March last year, and services like Facebook have since followed its lead.
