Women eye top posts

The five-day consultative workshop for the National Council of Women ended on a high note last week, with women leaders determined to vie for high government positions.

On Friday, Sumkar Open MP, Ken Fairweather, urged women to not be afraid to take up the office of the Governor-General.

Fairweather openly admitted to being the most unpopular man in parliament, due to the daring remarks he makes, one of which was the issue he raised in parliament in regards to a woman becoming the Governor-General.

“You end up dying, trying to figure out if this is the right time for a woman to become a GG,” said Fairweather, when asked by a Council of Women regional representative if he thought now was a good time for a woman to take up this prestigious office.

Prior to Fairweather’s visit, the Member of Sohe district, Delilah Gore, told NCW: “We have to be open minded and break away from the cultured way of thinking about the 22 reserve seats”.

“There are better ways to get into Parliament,” said Gore.

She encouraged aspiring female political candidates to consider joining a political party.

Women leaders left the workshop feeling empowered and prepared for the upcoming elections.

The seminar in Port Moresby was hosted by the National Council of Women, in partnership with the Department of Community Development and the Constitutional and Law Reform Commission.
