Why was my son shot - grieving dad

The father of the 25 year old man who died from a gunshot wound Thursday night is demanding answers from police over his son's death.

Police claimed Friday the vehicle he was in was involved in a "high speed car chase" but no other explanation was offered.

Police are understood to have shot at the vehicle, killing 25 year old mechanic, Nelson Rema from Enga and Southern Highlands.

His grieving father said Nelson was driving at the time and in the company of his brother, Private James Beno and aunt Linden Pini.

"Was my son shooting at police while they were chasing him?" Mokonda  Rema queried.

He wants the policemen involved arrested and investigated.

The family claims they were chased by police while returning home to Waigani.

"I want to know what my son did to warrant being shot at by police."

"I will wait for and explanation. If not, I will take the body to Boroko station."

An official complaint is yet to be made by the family.

Rema says police have abused their role as law enforcers and also abused the uniform they wear.

He says police brutality is real and the government has a duty to put an end to it.

This incident triggered a confrontation between police and soldiers at the Boroko police station Friday morning and later an attack on some police officers and their vehicles as they were refueling for the day at Korobosea’s Manu auto port.

Confirmation from both the police and defense force on whether anyone has been questioned or arrested is pending.
