Four US F16 warplanes have arrived at the Iraq Air Force's Balad base, north of Baghdad.
The Iraqi Defence Ministry say four F16s are already at Balad, part of a squadron of 36 purchased by the government.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, Minister of Defence Khalid al-Obeidi and Stuart Jones, the US Ambassador were there to watch the handover.
The new jets will boost Iraq's air force, which currently depends on several Russian-made secondhand Sukhoi jets.
