UPNG student leader calls on media to be fair

A student leader from UPNG’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) is urging the media to refrain from twisting facts or sensationalising events.

The Medical Faculty’s male Student Representative Council member, Hermin Peamo, made this statement during this morning’s forum at the Three-Mile campus.

“You are also citizens of this country,” he told journalists. “We are fighting for all of us.”

Peamo also appealed to the media to respect the students’ right to express themselves.

The UPNG students started their boycott on May 2, calling for Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to respect the integrity of the PM’s office and step aside.

“In the history of Papua New Guinea, he is the first PM to have numerous allegations levelled against him,” Loop PNG was told.

“Since the Office of the Prime Minister belongs to the people of the Independent State Of Papua New Guinea, we, the people, have the right to express dissatisfaction when its integrity comes into question.”

Lae’s University of Technology as well as the University of Goroka are also part of the fight.

During their five-week boycott, students have been visiting their respective provinces to carry out awareness on the current political issues that the country is facing.

The SMHS was supposed to resume classes today while the main campus is next week. However, Medfac has decided to continue with the boycott.
