UPNG Appeals Committee deliberate on ousted students

The University of Papua New Guinea’s Appeal Committee will meet on Thursday to deliberate on the status of students who were permanently excluded from studies last month.

The Committee is also expected to appoint a new member to replace its chairman who resigned during the period students were boycotting classes.

This comes after the students affected filed their respective appeals against the decision of the university to the committee on Sept 1st and 2nd.

Lawyer representing the University of Papua New Guinea’s administration, Darrel Kamen told the National Court today that the committee will meet tomorrow.

On Aug 29, the university sent out letters to students informing them of their permanent exclusion from studies.

Amongst those permanently excluded from studies were student leaders Livai Kuaken, Arthur Amos, Jamie Sali, Herculas Jim, Alois Kaluwe, Chris Kipalan and Steward Thoke.

On Sept 19 they filed a case seeking leave for a judicial review to be conducted into their exclusion.

On Sept 23, the National Court allowed that Judicial review to proceed to hearing that is expected on Oct 20.

An interim stay was issued against their permanent expulsion and UPNG’s administration was restrained by the court from implementing its decision on Aug 29.

However, the students were reportedly not allowed to re-register for the remaining semester after the court’s ruling last Friday.

Semester One has two weeks remaining before the students sit for exams.
